Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner for Presidential candidate, is making headlines in the domain industry today. Business Insider revealed that his company, Trump Organization, owns tens of thousands of domain names.
Initially when hearing that Trump owns thousands of domains, you would have assumed that he was a big-time domain investor. However, after reading the interview with Eric Trump, Donald’s son, it became clear that the company registers domains mostly for brand protection.
According to Eric Trump, who is the executive vice president of development and acquisitions at Trump Organization, the company registers thousands of domains every year. “We acquire thousands a year, and it’s smart,” Eric Trump said of the domain names. “It’s just a smart thing to do, and it’s a great way to protect yourself.”
Curiously, I looked at some of the domains registered by the company, and noticed that most of them include the word “Trump.” So it is pretty obvious that they are registering domains to keep them out of the hands of domain squatters or spammers. Although “Trump” is a trademarked term and Trump Organization could easily win domain ownership through UDRP filings, Eric’s logic for being proactive in brand protection is to save a lot of time.
On a separate note, what do you think of Trump’s chances of winning the 2016 presidential election?
